Industry costing templates

National costing templates to provide cost transparency and predictability when negotiating local site budgets in the UK helping to prevent delays during study set-up.

Latest versions April 2012

In conjunction with a number of stakeholders in the NHS and Industry, the NIHR Clinical Research Network has specifically developed three costing templates for use on commercially sponsored clinical trials running in NHS hospitals, Primary Care settings or involving a Medical Device. They provide a starting point for clear negotiation discussions. As they are based on the principles of the NHS Finance Manual, the templates provide cost transparency, consistency and predictability for companies while ensuring full cost recovery for the healthcare site.

The Industry costing templates are used for all studies supported by the Clinical Research Network and are utilised by almost all NHS Trusts. Although developed primarily to support these studies, the methodology is freely available to companies interested in running trials outside the Networks.

Support documents and online training are available on this page to help users understand and complete the templates, which are reviewed by each site to agree an appropriate fee for the study. You can access additional Clinical Research Network support when completing a costing template by emailing crncc.costinghelp@nihr.ac.uk

The templates are reviewed and updated on a regular basis. Please feel free to provide any feedback or suggestions to the Clinical Research Network for consideration in future versions at crncc.costingfeedback@nihr.ac.uk

PLEASE NOTE: Revised versions of the templates are currently being worked on to incorporate significant changes to the study set-up and pharmacy sections based on user feedback. These updated versions will be released later this year and more information can be found in the update summary document below.
