Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust

Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust is one of the largest teaching trusts in the United Kingdom with a reputation for excellent staff who provide high quality care from three hospitals:

  • City Hospital
  • Sandwell General Hospital
  • Rowley Regis Community Hospital

Sandwell General Hospital and City Hospital are busy acute hospitals with a full range of emergency services at both sites and Rowley Regis Community Hospital provides continuing care, rehabilitation and respite care. It also has a range of outpatient and diagnostic facilities. High quality healthcare is provided by this Trust which has some of the shortest waiting times in the country. We offer a wide range of adult and paediatric acute services, in addition to a number of specialist services for patients throughout the UK.

Statistics

Our Trust admits 117,000 patients a year for treatment and we provide services to between 500,000 and 600,000 people in Sandwell, western and central Birmingham and its surrounding areas. We have a £320m turnover and employ approximately 6,000 staff. Being located at the centre of the West Midlands conurbation means that we serve some of the most diverse and economically deprived communities in the UK.

Facilities

Our Trust has many new facilities, including the Birmingham Treatment Centre (BTC) which opened on the City Hospital site in November 2005. This £35m development provides state-of-the-art amenities for one-stop diagnosis and treatment. It includes an ambulatory surgical unit with six theatres, extensive imaging facilities, an integrated breast care centre and teaching accommodation. More than 140,000 people have attended outpatient appointments and 12,000 patients have had surgical procedures in the BTC since it was opened.

A new £18 million emergency services centre opened on the Sandwell site in April 2005. It incorporates a comprehensive A&E facility, emergency assessment unit and cardiac care unit. The model of care has been developed with primary care to provide a fully integrated service.

Research and Education

Aside from being the largest provider of acute patient services in the Midlands, Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust also has a substantial research agenda with portfolio status and hosts several academic departments including Ophthalmology, Cardiology and Rheumatology.

Our Trust is a teaching hospital of the University of Birmingham School of Medicine and we deliver undergraduate and specialist education for nurses and professions allied to medicine in conjunction with the University of Birmingham, the University of Wolverhampton and Birmingham City University. We are accredited as a centre for NVQ training and offer vocational education to local employers as well as to our own staff.
