If you wish to conduct research involving NHS patients, data or facilities, in addition to NHS R&D permission for your project, you may need to be covered by an appropriate HR agreement with the NHS organisation hosting your research. The type of HR agreement needed will be confirmed during the NHS permissions process and may include:
- an honorary research contract or
- a letter of access.
The Research in the NHS: HR Good Practice Resource Pack (the Resource Pack) describes streamlined HR arrangements (including the Research Passport System and NHS to NHS arrangements) for those wishing to conduct research in the NHS and was introduced by the Government, alongside several other measures to improve the research environment and, make it quicker and easier to begin approved studies.
This initiative simplifies administrative procedures when issuing honorary research contracts and letters of access to researchers, and presents a simplified approach for sharing details of the pre-engagement checks that researchers have undergone with the NHS.
