In particular:
- contribution to consultations on specific health and well-being research agenda
- assisting investigators in developing study designs that are relevant and have a good chance of recruiting research participants and
- assisting the efforts of the local NHS to improve the experience of research participants and
- contributing to the work of Local Specialty Groups whose remit is to asses 'feasibility and do-ability' of the NIHR Portfolio studies.
To acheive this Essex and Hertfordshire CLRN are working on a number of activities.
Generic Slide Show Template Available For all NHS Services To Inform Patients About Research Opportunities & To Introduce Research Teams
These slides support the Department of Health's strategy which puts patients at the centre of the NHS and supports informed choice by ensuring:
“that patients are notified of opportunities to join in relevant ethically approved research and are free to choose whether they wish to do so. Research is a core part of the NHS. The NHS will do all it can to ensure that patients, from every part of England, are made aware of research that is of particular relevance to them” (Handbook to the NHS Constitution 8th March 2010)
We are pleased to say that the concept endorsed by the NIHR originated locally within the Essex and Hertfordshire CLRN. The slides were trialled in 2009 usingTV screens in the waiting area of two Colchester general practices. A working group including staff and patient representatives from across the Primary Care Research Network, Diabetes Research Network and Research Design Service in the East of England and Essex & Hertfordshire CLRN was set up in 2010 to facilitate further development and to explore options for wider application in a consistent manner. This resulted in a Power Point slide template that can be easily tailored to promote local NHS organisation's involvement with the NIHR research, their local research sites, teams and current studies available for patients to join in.
The slide set is available free of charge and is designed to be displayed on TV screens in patient waiting. The slides can be tailored to your organisation and will include information about the NIHR research taking place in the local area.

Essex and Hertfordshire CLRN and East of England Research Design Service (RDS) joint Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) event
This PPI event took place in Chelmsford on Saturday 8 November 2008. The event was held on a Saturday with the aim of extending the opportunity to engage with research to a wider range of people in the CLRN's local communities.
The event was aimed at anyone with an interest in research but especially at service-users who already contribute to R&D, e.g. patient forums, local research groups and clinical trial development groups. This event was equally important to the general public, academia and NHS staff conducting research.
People interested in this event may also be interested in information on the NIHR website.
