The remit of the Surgical Specialty Group is to support a national portfolio of structured research studies in the field of surgical medicine.One of the main purposes of the Specialty Group is to ensure that clinical research studies which fall within the remit of the group deliver to target by developing and supporting a research infrastructure within the specialty which promotes engagement of the surgical research community and provides the local support necessary to undertake high quality research studies within the NHS. The Surgery Specialty Group portfolio covers clinical research in: Gastrointestinal surgery, Cardiothoracic surgery, Vascular surgery, Endocrine surgery, Breast surgery
Key disease areas include: Benign gastrointestinal surgery, Atherosclerosis and Breast disease
There is overlap between the surgical Specialty Group and some of the other Specialty Groups and NIHR Topic Specific Research Networks.In general, the surgical Specialty Group will take the lead on research studies which are led by, or have significant input from surgeons.
Surgical oncology studies will continue to be led by the National Cancer Research Network but will be co-adopted by the Surgical Specialty Group.
