Key role for health research in the Government's Plan for Growth

28 March 2011

Plan for growth front cover imageThe Healthcare and Life Sciences section of the Government's Plan for Growth highlights that health research has a key role in the national economy as well as in improving health and care. In the Plan, the Government makes a series of announcements that will be of great significance for the health R&D community and for the NIHR in the coming years.

Key items of interest include;

  • the creation of a health research regulatory agency as a Special Health Authority (with NRES as a core) which will work closely with MHRA to create a unified approval process for clinical trials services;
  • a NIHR Research Support Services framework by May 2011;
  • a UK Clinical Trials Gateway to make it easier for patients and the public to find out about clinical trials relevant for them;
  • and translational research partnerships to support collaboration with the life sciences industry.
