The Infectious Diseases and Microbiology Specialty
Group is one of 23 Specialty Groups which provide
national networks of topic-specific expertise. These
groups are key to the success of the CCRN. They
work at both national and local levels to ensure
the successful delivery of research within their
specialties. This means ensuring that studies are
delivered to target and on time.
The remit of the Infectious Diseases and Microbiology Specialty Group is to support a national portfolio of structured research studies relating to the pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of infectious diseases. The Infectious Diseases and Microbiology Specialty Group’s portfolio includes:
- Studies of the pathogenesis and treatment of acute and chronic infectious diseases including HIV, tuberculosis, hepatitis, meningitis, pneumonia, skin and soft tissue infection, influenza, septicaemia, gastroenteritis, urinary tract infection and sexually transmitted infections
- Studies of the prevention, treatment and infection control of hospital-acquired infections such as MRSA and Clostridium difficile disease
- Prevention of infections by vaccination particularly acute infectious diseases such as influenza, pneumonia, meningitis, hepatitis, childhood exanthems and herpes viruses
- Studies of diagnostic methodologies in microbiology laboratories of relevance to clinical infectious diseases.
