'Event celebrating Patient and Public Involvement in Research’
Thursday 20 June 2013
A big thank you to everyone who attended our Patient and Public Involvement event on Thursday 20 June 2013 at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre. It was great to see so many people there from the NHS, members of patient groups, members of Universities and other organisations.
The day celebrated successful examples of collaborative work between patients/members of the public and organisations which support research and looked to future plans. Our speakers included patients and members of the public and staff from a variety of different organisations; the Oxford Academic Health Science Network, Primary Care Research Network, Cancer Research Network, Dementias and Neurodegenerative Disease Network (DeNDRoN), Berkshire Healthcare Foundation Trust’s ‘Patient and Public Involvement in Research’ group, the Oxford Biomedical Research Centre and the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences.
Following a warm welcome from Val Woods, Thames Valley CLRN Senior Manager, Daniel Spiers from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network Communications Team began by outlining the NIHR’s Patient Awareness Campaigns, including the soon to be launched ‘Research Changed my life’ campaign.
Several members of patient groups gave inspiring talks about their work to help guide research, including their motivations for getting involved and the benefits and challenges. In one of the workshops, the audience were asked for their opinions on the development of the Oxford Patient Research Registry (OxPaRRM) which aims to create a database of patients at the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences who consent to be contacted about research and a large repository of anonymised clinical and patient healthcare data.
