Research Capability Funding in the West Anglia CLRN area
West Anglia CLRN is calling for applications for the new NIHR Research Capability Funding (RCF) available for financial year 2012/13.
RCF replaces Flexibility and Sustainability Funding (FSF) from April 2012 and is allocated to research-active NHS organisations and NIHR Clinical Research Networks for their local research networks.
Under RCF, permitted uses of the funding will be widened, allowing for local discretion and management of people to support and develop patient- and people-driven research.
RCF will provide for salary costs of NIHR Faculty members in clearly defined circumstances. It will only support salary costs, including direct (i.e. salary) and indirect (e.g. payroll and HR) costs. It will not fund running costs.
Although West Anglia CLRN accepts applications for RCF throughout the year, early applications may have a greater chance of securing funding. The deadline for RCF is currently Friday 1 June 2012.
- To apply to West Anglia CLRN for RCF, download and complete the RCF application form (doc, 90KB).
IMPORTANT Please ensure you read the RCF FAQs available on the NIHR website before you complete the application form:
nihr.ac.uk/infrastructure/Pages/research_capability_funding NEW: NHS Infrastructure Support Application Forms
We are pleased to announce the release of revised NHS Infrastructure Support Application Forms on our website. These must be filled in and sent electronically to the email address provided. We must also receive a printed, signed copy of your application. Please note we cannot process your application unless we have (1) received it electronically in the first instance, with all supporting documentation and (2) received a printed, signed copy in the post.
The key differences are:
- Forms and supporting documents are now to be emailed to: clrnapplications@addenbrookes.nhs.uk
- Your application will be acknowledged and logged with a unique WACLRN reference to track its progress
- There are now separate forms for non-commercial and commercial studies.
IMPORTANT:
Please use the non-commercial form to request support costs, as defined in the ARCO guidance.
For commercial studies (industry-funded and industry-sponsored), you can only apply for research nurse team support, and this MUST be discussed and agreed with the Senior Research Nurse Manager and Industry Manager, ideally when you are approached about the study during the feasibility stage.
Your R&D department will also need to be informed to ensure the necessary contractual arrangements are in place.
We encourage you to contact us with any queries you may have while completing the form to make the review process as straightforward as possible.

ARCO (Attributing Revenue Costs of externally-funded non-commercial research in the NHS) guidelines
This document aims to clarify the distinction between research costs, NHS support costs and treatment costs in relation to activity specified in the research application/protocol; and to help attribution between the NHS and the external funder of: (1) patient-related activity; (2) clinical staffing; and (3) placebos and medicines.
You can download the ARCO guidelines from the Department of Health website.
