Who can use CSP?

Research studies are reviewed for inclusion in the NIHR CRN Portfolio in parallel with the Ethics review and the NIHR CSP process.

who can use cspIf your study is not automatically eligible for the NIHR CRN Portfolio you are permitted to use NIHR CSP whilst a new funder is being assessed and/or the study is being considered for adoption.

If the funder does not meet the Department of Health criteria, or if your study is not adopted by the Comprehensive Clinical Research Network, the Primary Care Research Network or one of the six Topic-specific Clinical Research Networks, the study is not permitted to continue through NIHR CSP. A governance report showing all the checks undertaken to that point will be emailed to the Chief Investigator.

NIHR-funded studies in Biomedical Research Centres (BRCs), Biomedical Research Units (BRUs) or Collaborations for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRCs) are able to use NIHR CSP, although they are not included on the NIHR CRN Portfolio as they do not require clinical infrastructure service support.

UK-wide studies

We work closely with key partners in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to ensure a smooth permissions process for studies taking place across the UK. If you want to know more about UK-wide studies contact us on the CSP Helpdesk.

Unclear if your study is eligible?

If, after checking the portfolio eligibility criteria, you have doubts about your study's eligibility, we advise the Chief Investigator or study coordinator to complete and submit a CSP Application Form through IRAS.
