My research journey: a stroke patient's story

Encouraging patient participation and involvement in stroke research.

Brin HelliwellThe first of four short films portraying one patient’s journey in research is now available to view.

In 2005 school teacher Brin Helliwell had a stroke which left him partially paralysed, and changed his life. Since then, Brin’s determination to make the best recovery possible has led him to become involved in a number of clinical research studies. Brin believes this has had a positive effect on his recovery – in more ways than one.

The video project was initiated by Brin in his role as a patient representative from the West Midlands Stroke Research Network’s management board. Tasked with promoting patient and public involvement across his Network, Brin came up with the idea of creating a video to show other patients that taking part in research can be a rewarding experience.

Part 1: Motivation, was released today, 7 October 2011, and describes how Brin began his research journey as a participant. Subsequent episodes will be released on each Friday over the next three weeks in the run up to World Stroke Day which takes place on 29 October.
