NHS Information Governance guidance note on security of NHS patient data shared for research purposes

It is essential that everyone who has access to information about NHS patients understands and meets appropriate information security standards. The Cabinet Office has completed a review of public sector data handling and has established a comprehensive range of minimum security standards. Consequently, NHS guidance for the protection of patient information has been extended and strengthened in order to respond robustly to these requirements.

UK Research Integrity Office (UKRIO) Procedure for Investigating Allegations of Misconduct in Research

This step-by-step procedure is aimed at all organisations engaged in research using funds from funders such as the Research Councils and other government bodies, as well as from charities, overseas funding bodies and the commercial sector. It sets out an approach to be followed from the first receipt of an allegation through to the investigation panel which will decide on whether there was in fact any misconduct. The procedure is designed to ensure that investigations are carried out both thoroughly and fairly.

Equity in clinical research: Inclusion of older participants

All patients in the NHS, including older people, should have the opportunity to participate in relevant high quality research. Avoiding arbitrary upper age limits will make trial findings more generalisable, increase the pool of potential participants, and improve recruitment by involving the additional networks, for example the Age and Ageing network.
